Our rounders tournament raises over £400 for our Charity of the Year!

Athene Communications, a local PR and communications consultancy, raised over £400 in their annual rounders tournament at Ferry Meadows for the Cancer Wellbeing Service based at the Robert Horrell Macmillan Centre at Peterborough City Hospital.

Nine teams competed in an ultra-competitive series of matches with a side from each group progressing to the next stage, with some close matches and others where whole sides were almost knocked out by some rapid fielding. The nine teams included two Athene squads, a team from the design agency Speed, a group from Vivacity and the victorious Cambridge Meridian Academy’s Trust to name but a few.

The games culminated in a three-way final, with the entirely CMAT team winning both playoff matches, the Nene Park Trust and CMAT joint team taking second place and the Bulley Davey side coming in third.

The chosen charity for the tournament this year was The Cancer Wellbeing Service based at The Robert Horrell Centre at Peterborough City Hospital. The new Cancer Wellbeing Service provides some great new support facilities, which specifically help people living with and beyond cancer. The service provides invaluable support such as art and creative therapies, complementary therapies such as acupuncture, emotional and financial support and a drop-in service to anyone affected.

The raffle was a great success, managing to raise an amazing £168, with prizes such as a Tattinger bottle of Champagne and a £30 voucher for Petrol Head.

Managing Director of Athene, Richard Astle spoke about the event saying, “The rounders tournament was an enjoyable and successful evening, and most importantly raised a great total for the Cancer Wellbeing Service. As always it is important to say a huge thank you to the Nene Park Trust, as the event would not be possible without them allowing us use of their wonderful park. Thanks also need to be said to the caterers, Queens Bank Farm, for keeping us all fed and energised for the games.

“Charity work is an essential part of Athene’s mission, and events like this are a brilliant way for clients and colleagues to unite to raise money and have fun for a brilliant cause. We were blessed with perfect weather for rounders, so I could not have asked for anything more”.
