This blog is the fourth instalment of our Meet the Team series. This month, we caught up with Rachel Allerton, our Account Executive. Below, Rachel shares why she enjoys working in communications and what her role as an Account Executive has held for her so far!
What is your career history?
I studied Human Geography at the University of Newcastle and graduated in 2017 with a first-class honours degree. I waitressed part-time while I explored what industry I would like to work in and then joined Athene in 2018 and have never looked back!
What drew you to working in communications?
I am a people person and love getting to know what makes people tick. Working in communications seemed like a great fit as not only is it client-facing, but effective and impactful communications come from really understanding both your clients’ needs and what their audience is looking for.
Also, communications cover such a broad range of work that it felt like a really exciting industry to be a part of.
What is your role at Athene and what does that involve?
I am an Account Executive and work predominately for our Internal Communications, Public Relations and Education PR clients, though I also support on Community Engagement and business development.
My day-to-day work and projects are very varied but overall, my job is to work with and support Senior Account Executives, Managers and Directors on delivery for clients. This can include writing press releases, managing social media accounts, attending meetings or copywriting.
Have you completed any related courses or qualifications?
Yes, I completed the CIPR ‘Introduction to PR’ course last year which was useful for understanding the foundations of public relations. This year, I was fortunate to take part in the CIPR ‘Strategic Internal Communications and Employee Engagement’ course which I loved! It gave me a real insight into the world of internal communications and how to work on a more strategic level with people in senior positions. Both courses were also great networking opportunities.
What have been some of your biggest achievements at Athene?
One of my biggest achievements has been leading on an internal newsletter for over 700 staff. When I first started at Athene, I helped to write a few articles and over the years I have progressed to leading on the newsletter which includes planning, interviewing employees, copywriting and content creation, working with designers and printers and liaising with the client.
What has been the biggest challenge in your career?
During my second week at Athene, I was in an accident which meant I had a phased return to work over the course of several months – while not something you expect to happen, I was really fortunate that the team were so supportive and made sure I felt welcome even though I was so new!
What is your favourite thing about working for Athene?
The people! We all get on very well and enjoy working together and you are valued for what you bring to the company, both professionally and in terms of personality.
What three words would you use to describe Athene?
Forward-thinking. Motivated. Quality.
What is an interesting fact about yourself?
I have size two feet which always seems to surprise people… they usually ask how I balance – I think it’s all the years of ballet practice!
